CDMX {Mexico City} Guide: Part 1
We had never been to Mexico City so last summer we decided to add a couple of days after our stay in Morelos Mexico since we would be flying out of Mexico City. We only had two short days there and there is so much to see and do in this city! We tried to fit what we could with out making it feel like we were go, go, go–we wanted to enjoy it. So here are few of the things we saw during our short stay!
Where to Stay:
The Red Treehouse B&B
We stayed at the amazing Red Treehouse B&B and we LOVED it there! As a matter of fact, I’m debating whether or not to share this gem afraid it will be even more popular and booked all the time! The Red Treehouse is located in the Condesa neighborhood surrounded by trees, parks and it’s a convenient location for transportation. Condesa is a charming neighborhood, you even forget you are in such a huge city! It has tons of restaurants and bars that are walking distance. We really enjoyed our stay at the Red Treehouse, the staff was great–very helpful and informative. They have a main house (The Red Treehouse) and another house across the street (La Rama) and last summer they were working on an addition next to the main house that looked pretty cool called “The Gallery”. I can’t wait to see that addition next week! Our rooms were in the La Rama (across the main house), I stayed in room La Luna, rooms were great, clean and vibrant–we even had our own terrace since we stayed on the top level. They have some pretty cool art hanging on the wall and a mural outside of the main house. The Red Treehouse offers daily breakfasts and happy hours which we thoroughly enjoyed! The food was delicious and happy hour was fun. We enjoyed starting our evenings at happy hour and meeting other guests and making friends! Another thing I loved about The Red Treehouse is that they have a house dog, Romeo, a yellow lab! He was about 4 months last summer and was so cute! He reminded me of my lab back home. So if you love dogs you will love this, though it may make you miss your own pup!
What to Do:
Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral / Zocalo
We took the subway and then walked over the the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral. The Cathedral is the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mexico and it has very beautiful detail. The Cathedral sits on the former Aztec Sacred Precinct Templo Mayor which was the main Aztec Temple. We went into the cathedral but didn’t get to check out the Templo Mayor area–but maybe we will this next time! We also saw Aztec Dancers performing next to the cathedral in the Zocalo dressed in their Aztec clothing and feathered headdresses. It was pretty cool to see.
Torre Latino
From the cathedral we walked down Madero street, which is basically a pedestrian street and it is full of shops and restaurants. We ended up at Torre Latino and went up to El Mirador for spectacular views of the city from it’s 44th floor. When the tower was completed in 1956, it was the tallest building in Latin America. Adult entrance is less than $6USD. The tower also has a museum, cafeteria/shop, restaurant and office spaces.
Castillo de Chapultepec (Chapultepec Castle)
Castillo de Chapultepec was definitely a treat! It’s such a beautiful museum with tons of history to see! The castle is located on top of Chapultepec hill in Chapultepec park which is one of the largest parks in the world. The castle was formerly a presidential residence, military academy and now is the National Museum of History. If you are ever in CDMX this is a must see in my book!
Angel de la Independencia (The Angel of Independence)
El Angel is located in downtown Mexico City on a round about on the Paseo de la Reforma and it is one of Mexico’s most recognized landmarks. The angel was built to commemorate Mexicos independence from Spain. We saw the angel from a distance when at Chapultepec Castle and up close one night after dinner.
Where to Eat:
Here are some of the spots we went to for lunch/drinks/dinner:
Maque – located in Condesa down the street from the Red Treehouse. We went for brunch and enjoyed the food there.
Lampuga – nice seafood restaurant located in Condesa, food and drinks were good
Cabrera 7 – located in Roma Norte, we went for lunch and drinks, sat upstairs and enjoyed the view of the park across the street.
De Mar a Mar – seafood restaurant located near the Angel de la Independencia, food and drinks were good
Baltra – cozy bar located in Condesa, great drinks.
Gin Gin – hip spot located in Roma, we went here for drinks after dinner, music was bumping –cocktails were priced about the same as in the U.S.
Although I do love me some nice restaurants, I’m looking forward to eating more local Mexican food on my next trip. Give me all the street food! haha
We definitely felt like we barely saw all Mexico City has to offer and we knew we wanted to come back. There is just so much to see and do in this awesome city! We are excited to be going back next week and exploring more of CDMX! Have you been to Mexico City? What are your most favorite things to do there?
Stay tuned for CDMX: Part 2 post coming soon!
xoxo,
Raquel
